1. Introduction
Welcome to LizSpeedTest ("we", "our", or "us"), developed by Liz Media.
We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect,
how we use it, and your rights regarding that information when you use our Android application.
By downloading and using LizSpeedTest, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance
with this policy.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information Stored Locally on Your Device
The following data is stored in your device's local app storage (Room database / DataStore) and is never transmitted to our servers:
- Speed Test Results: Download speed, upload speed, ping (latency), jitter, and packet loss recorded from each test. Free users store up to 20 results; Pro subscribers store up to 300 results. The oldest record is removed automatically when the limit is reached.
- Server Information: The test server name and city used for each test.
- Network Metadata: Your public IP address and ISP name as returned by the speed test server at the time of the test. Stored locally only; not collected by us.
- Wi-Fi Network Metadata: When you are connected via Wi-Fi at the time of a test, the app reads and stores your Wi-Fi SSID (network name), frequency band (2.4 / 5 / 6 GHz), signal strength (RSSI in dBm), and channel number alongside the test result. This data is stored exclusively on your device and is included in CSV exports. Wi-Fi SSID may be considered sensitive as it can be associated with a home or workplace network.
- Test Timestamps: Date and time of each completed speed test.
- App Preferences: Your chosen language, speed units, connection mode (single/multi-thread), speed scale, and history save toggle — stored locally via Android DataStore.
Android Auto Backup Notice: Android may automatically back up app data — including locally stored test history (which contains Wi-Fi SSID and network metadata) — to your personal Google Drive account if Auto Backup is enabled on your device. This backup is associated with your Google account and is governed by
Google's Privacy Policy. You can disable Auto Backup for this app in
Settings → Google → Backup. We are working to exclude the test history database from Auto Backup in a future app update.
2.2 Information Transmitted During Speed Testing
When you run a speed test, the app connects to distributed third-party speed test servers around the world.
The following occurs during this connection:
- Your Public IP Address is sent to speed test servers as part of the standard TCP/IP connection required to perform the test. This is technically necessary and cannot be avoided in any speed test.
- Test Data Packets: Anonymous download and upload data payloads are exchanged with speed test servers solely to measure connection speed. These packets contain no personal information.
- Server Configuration Request: The app fetches the list of available test servers and your approximate geographic location (derived from your IP) from the speed test service's public API.
2.3 Background Automated Speed Tests
If you enable the Auto Test feature in Settings, the app uses Android WorkManager to run speed tests automatically in the background on a schedule. The app also registers a RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED broadcast to reschedule background tests after a device reboot. Each background test collects and stores the same data as a manual test (see Section 2.1), including Wi-Fi network metadata if connected via Wi-Fi. Background tests may send push notifications with the result; you can revoke notification permission at any time in your device's Settings → Apps → LizSpeedTest → Notifications.
2.4 Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or any account information.
- We do not access your precise or coarse GPS location, contacts, camera, microphone, or files.
- We do not track you across apps or websites for advertising or profiling.
- We do not sell your personal data to any third party.
- We do not share your personal data with third parties except as described in Section 7 (Third-Party Services) below.
3. Permissions Used
LizSpeedTest declares the following Android permissions:
| Permission |
Type |
Purpose |
| INTERNET |
Normal |
Required to connect to speed test servers and perform download/upload speed measurements. |
| ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE |
Normal |
Checks whether a network connection is available before initiating a test. |
| ACCESS_WIFI_STATE |
Normal |
Reads Wi-Fi connection details — including SSID, frequency band (2.4 / 5 / 6 GHz), signal strength (RSSI), and channel number — to record Wi-Fi network metadata alongside each speed test result and to display connection type context in the UI. |
| POST_NOTIFICATIONS |
Dangerous (Android 13+) |
Sends push notifications to deliver background auto-test results. Requested at runtime on Android 13 and above; you can deny or revoke this permission at any time without affecting core speed test functionality. |
| RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED |
Normal |
Allows the app to reschedule background auto-test jobs via WorkManager after the device is rebooted, so that previously configured automatic tests resume without requiring you to reopen the app. |
The app does not request location, contacts, storage, camera, or microphone permissions. POST_NOTIFICATIONS is the only dangerous permission and is optional — its sole purpose is delivering background test result notifications.
4. Data Retention and Deletion
- Test History: Stored locally in a Room database on your device. Free users retain up to 20 records; Pro subscribers retain up to 300 records. The oldest record is removed automatically when the limit is reached. You may manually delete individual records or clear all history at any time in the History screen.
- App Preferences: Stored locally via Android DataStore and cleared when you uninstall the app.
- Android Auto Backup: Android may back up the local database to your Google Drive (see Section 2.1 notice). You can disable this in your device's backup settings.
- No server-side data: We do not operate a server that stores your personal data; there is nothing to request server-side deletion of from us.
5. Children's Privacy
LizSpeedTest does not knowingly collect any personal information from children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age threshold in your jurisdiction). The app is a general-purpose network utility and does not target children. If you believe your child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
6. Data Security
All locally stored data (test history and preferences) is stored in your device's sandboxed application storage, which is protected by Android's built-in security model. App preferences are stored using Android DataStore with encryption on supported devices. Since we do not transmit personal data to our servers, the risk surface for data breaches is minimal.
7. Third-Party Services
7.1 Speed Test Infrastructure
The App connects to a global network of third-party speed test servers to perform measurements.
This is initiated only when you tap "Start", and is limited to the technical data required (IP address and test data packets).
7.2 Analytics (Google Firebase Analytics)
We use Google Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous usage statistics that help us understand
how users interact with the app and improve its features. Firebase Analytics may collect:
- Anonymous device identifiers and app instance IDs
- App version, device model, operating system version
- Screen views and general interaction events (no personal content)
This data is sent to Google and is governed by Google's Privacy Policy. Firebase Analytics does not share your data with us in an identifiable form.
7.3 Crash Reporting (Firebase Crashlytics)
We use Firebase Crashlytics to automatically collect crash reports when the app encounters an error.
Crash reports may include:
- Stack traces and error messages (no personal user data)
- Device model, OS version, and app version at time of crash
- An anonymous installation ID
Crash data is sent to Google and governed by Google's Privacy Policy. This data is used solely to identify and fix bugs.
7.4 Performance Monitoring (Firebase Performance)
We use Firebase Performance Monitoring to collect anonymous performance metrics that help us identify and resolve performance bottlenecks. Performance Monitoring may collect:
- Network request durations and response sizes (no request body or personal content)
- Screen rendering performance (frame rates, slow/frozen frames)
- App startup time and custom trace durations
- Device model, OS version, and app version
Performance data is sent to Google and governed by Google's Privacy Policy. None of this data is linked to identifiable users.
7.5 Advertising
The current version of LizSpeedTest does not display any advertisements. The app contains no advertising SDK and no ad-related data is collected or shared. If advertising is introduced in a future version, this policy will be updated accordingly before that version is released.
8. Your Rights
